While the weather was extremely hot on July 16, 112 golfers braved that heat in support of the East Wellington Community Services (EWCS) annual golf tournament at the Guelph Lakes Golf and Country Club.
Officials say the event was a huge success, raising “an incredible” $21,400 for EWCS.
Golfers had a catered barbecue lunch before hopping into their golf carts for the shot gun start of the tournament. Throughout the day, there was plenty of water made available, courtesy of the golf course and golfers were encouraged to re-fill the donated stainless steel re-usable water bottles donated by the Wellington Water Watchers group.
Afterward, the golfers gathered for a steak dinner where the bidding became fierce in the live auction, hosted by Kevin McArthur. Officials say it was “a great evening of fun that capped off a great day of community spirit and support for EWCS.”
“This event means so much to our agency and meant a great deal to Dan Steeves who set a goal to raise $20,000. EWCS meant a lot to Dan and we miss his straightforward comments and quick sense of humour,” said EWCS executive director Kari Simpson, who fought back tears as she recalled Dan’s plans for the tournament.
“Our staff, volunteers and board members miss him. Through reaching and exceeding his fundraising goal, we know that we have made Dan proud.”
Officials say the successful event would not have been possible without the support of the East Wellington community and the hard work of the 2013 golf committee members.
“The day really came together,” said Nick Green, who chaired the 2013 golf committee. “The hard work of all the committee members was exceptional – the day would not have been the success it was without their hard work, enthusiasm and dedication to meeting, and exceeding, the fundraising target and in making the event special for all participants and sponsors.”
