Bringing together fabric, colour and textures has led to Elora Centre for the Arts member Lyn Barrett-Cowan’s exhibition at Centre Wellington's administration building.
On July 15, Centre Wellington Mayor Joanne Ross-Zuj said the new artwork “has led to a transformation of the council chambers and hallway, with some just amazing pieces.”
The showing is part of the ongoing Art in Public Places program which provides a rotating spotlight for local artists.
Barrett-Cowan said she has been attracted to textural subjects since her “earliest adventures in drawing and painting.”
“The variety of colour and texture offered by the medium of fibre, even as a child fascinated me.”
Barrett-Cowan described her work as exploring and mastering technical elements and in finding expression for challenging subjects.
“I am especially drawn to the things that usually go unnoticed by others.”
She also stated her work in fabric is highly influenced by her work in watercolour.
“I am very honoured that you allowed my artwork to be shown here. It is one thing to do it in your own little world, but it is another when people get to see and appreciate it.”
She added “it is really fun for me to see it out and showcased like this.”
Collage technique
Barrett-Cowan described her technique as including a lot of collage.
“People seem to feel compelled to give me bags and bags of fabric they have no clue what to do with.”
Barrett-Cowan said she gets ideas based on her experience painting watercolours.
“I work on a what if process. I never make sketches because then I would be tied to something rather than let the creative process do its own thing.”
She added that at least 90 per cent of the fabrics used in these pieces would have otherwise ended up in landfill sites.
Ross-Zuj thanked Barrett-Cowan for “sharing with the municipality and allowing us to enjoy it.”
