When Stait Park reopens this month, a new sign will recognize one of the major players to make this barrier free accessible park a reality.
On June 24, Centre Wellington councillors reviewed the agreement with Fergus-Elora Rotary Club in regards to the barrier free playground in Stait Park.
In May, the township approved the installation of a barrier free playground in Stait Park which has been conceived from the idea to implementation by the local volunteer group “Power of Play” spearheaded by Andy Speers.
At that time, council also approved an agreement with the Fergus Elora Rotary Club which intends to donate a total of $50,000 to project.
The club has no input on final decisions on the playground including the design, colour or equipment,
By making this donation, Rotary will be helping the many citizens in the community with physical and cognitive disabilities, and will help provide all children with a great place to play and learn.
Although the club would be cited as the main sponsor of the accessible portion of the park, other sponsors will still be honoured for their contributions.
The club will have the final decision on the welcome sign, including colours and design. The Rotary International logo and playground name as above will predominate the sign, top and centred.
Rotary will also be considered a “Gold Sponsor” and its name will also appear in the “Gold Sponsor area” of the signage which would be similar to that at Jubilee Park in Southampton.
At the time of the council session, township CAO Andy Goldie said the intent is for the park to open in mid-July.
Councillor Fred Morris said that for clarification, the overall park name will remain Stait Park, but the playground area is having a specific name attributed to it.
“It is just the playground that will be named the Rotary playground,” Goldie said.
In response to councillor Walt Visser’s question on funding, Goldie said that it is in place for the park.
The township is covering the cost of amenities around the park area such as improved parking and sidewalks.
