Gardeners can help support food bank with local Grow an Extra Row initiative

The Erin food bank program is seeking help to provide fresh vegetables to clients with the “grow an extra row” program.

Residents in the community are asked to help by setting aside an extra row in their garden for the most common vegetables that can, in turn, be donated to the food bank.

Through the weekly distributions at the Erin food bank, the items are set out “farmer’s market” style and clients can choose fresh vegetables to add to their regular food bank hamper.

Fresh vegetables are appreciated by food bank clientswho may find it difficult to purchase fresh items due to the restriction of cost.

“It’s another way that the community can help the food bank provide support to our neighbors in need and help them to be able to have healthy food choices available,” says Erika Westcott, manager of Community and Volunteer Services with East Wellington Community Services.

“There are so many talented gardeners in the area, I wanted to find a way to engage them in being able to help those in our community who need it most through their garden.”

Vegetable items that are most needed include lettuce, carrots, potatoes, cucumbers, tomatoes, beans, peppers and onions.
