GRCA encourages tree planting

The Grand River Conservation Authority says tree planting is more important than ever due to the loss of trees to development, severe weather and invasive pests such as the emerald ash borer and pine shoot beetle.

In case anyone needs more incentive, the authority offers the following 12 benefits provided by trees:

1. They produce oxygen, and because we all need to breathe, that is pretty much essential.

2. Trees provide shade on a hot day.

3. Protection from the wind on a windy day.

4. They deaden the noise of traffic.

5. Trees provide a home for insects, birds and animals.

6. They help clean water, because they filter it before it goes into the waterways.

7. They stop erosion by keeping the soil on the land.

8. They offer food to other living creatures.

9. They provide materials for products like furniture, paper and campfires.

10. They help moderate river flows.

11. Visiting forests clears your mind and is a great way to exercise.

12. Trees are beautiful.
