Swans take to the water at Wellington Terrace to provide visual treat

It’s a sure sign of spring when the swans of Elora are released to the waters at venues throughout the village.

On April 27, three of the swans, Will, Kate and Victoria, were taken by volunteers to the pond behind the Wellington Terrace Long-Term Care Home.

“Uther and Merlin go on the Irvine River in Salem and Daredevil and Dorinda go on the Grand River in Elora,” said volunteer caretaker Linda Groocock.

“The swans that go on open water are not released until the long weekend in May due to fluctuations in the water level and strength of flow during spring rains and water run off.”

With the birds set to take to the water, the upkeep of their permanent winter lodging next to the LCBO and pump station in Elora requires work.

“We are in need of roofing supplies for our swan shed,  either asphalt shingles or sheet metal roofing. Sheet metal would certainly last forever,” Groocock.

“It would also be nice to have eavestrough and we are also looking to enclose our water pump in a small, insulated compartment,” she said, adding a load of gravel is also needed for the pen area.

Groocock added year-round care of the swans is handled by volunteers who provide care based on donations.

“Each day of the week is assigned to a volunteer to feed and clean the swan compound in all weather conditions. It was a cold winter this year,” Groocock said.

“Nieuwland Feeds donates food for the swans year round and L&M grocery provides lettuce,” she noted.  The swan pen also housed two swans from Guelph this winter, with boarding fees provided.

Efforts are underway to find a temporary location to house the birds this fall, as a construction project at the pumping station will require the swan’s compound to be moved.
