The Arboretum at the University of Guelph is hosting two events.
On May 3 or 4 from 9:30am to 4:30pm participants can join naturalist Richard Aaron in a workshop that is really two workshops in one.
In addition to learning how to identify springtime flora, participants will go “beyond the field guide” to delve into interesting aspects of these plants’ natural history, ecology, lore and uses.
Following a brief classroom session, the remainder of time will be spent exploring the Arboretum’s trails engaged in hands-on exercises and stimulating discussions.
Participants should bring lunch, their favourite wildflower field guide, and a hand lens if they have one.
The registration fee is $75 plus HST. For more information or to register call The Arboretum at 824-4120 extension 52358.
On May 11 the Arboretum is hosting a Garden and Wildflower Photography Workshop. With peonies and irises soon to bloom, the workshop’s aim is on how to get the best floral photographs.
The guest instructor is photographer Sylvia Galbraith who will lead the workshop at The Arboretum, University of Guelph on May 11 from 9am to 12pm.
Participants will learn how to take inspired flower photos. The course will include a discussion on the lighting, composing of photos, working with colours, taking close-up images, and which equipment works best for garden and wildflower photography.
Participants will explore black and white flower photography, abstract shapes and textures, and how different camera settings can be used for creative effects.
The second half of the workshop will be outside, where the woods and gardens of the Arboretum will be photographed.
With this course participants will be able to enjoy their garden all year.
Participants should bring their camera and dress for the weather. Basic to intermediate level photographers should come equipped with a film or digital, SLR or point-and-shoot camera. A tripod is recommended.
The registration fee is $5. For more information or to register by the deadline of May 2, 2013, call The Arboretum at 824-4120 extension 52358.
