Over 70 members enjoyed a potluck supper at the annual general meeting of the Fergus Horticultural Society. They were joined by district director Dorelene Anderson from Harriston and councillor Walt Visser, representing the Township of Centre Wellington.
Councillor Visser brought greetings from Centre Wellington and remarked on the comments people have made about the beauty of the flower beds the society plants and maintains. He emphasized that council appreciates the society’s efforts.
President Roberta Vlietstra gave a report outlining the past year’s activities, which included three flower shows, the May Plant Sale, helping children pot pansies for Mother’s Day at the Home Show, June Garden Tour and two summer coffee socials at BT Corner and Templin Gardens.
Donations were extended to the Greener McQueen project and the new kitchen garden at Centre Wellington District High School. The society also contributed funds for the purchase of two benches for BT Corner.
Ten-year pins were presented to Jean Cardinal and Joan McWilliams. President’s certificates were presented to Bob Telford, George Philip Kron, Dean McKay, Bert Peel and Bruce Youngblood for their dedication to the “Diggin’ in the Dirt” crew. A certificate was also presented to Verna Smith for her work with the yearbook and Newsletter.
Anderson brought greetings from District 7 and inducted the officers and directors for 2013 :

– 1st vice-president, Alec Calder;
– 2nd vice-president, Don Marshall;
– secretary, Doreen Telford;
– treasurer, Fran Binning,;
– past president, Helen Lacroix; and
– directors: Kathy Bouma, Michelle Goff, Nico Vandersluis, Claire McKay, Bert Peel, Bruce Youngblood, Sharon Oughton and Matilda Parsons.
