Merry Makers hear about Alaskan tour

President Mary Mighton of the Clifford Merry Makers took 21 seniors on an adventurous tour with a presentation on her trip to Alaska at the seniors meeting held on April 4 at Jamesway Manor in Clifford.

Reports were given, Happy Birthday was sung, and congratulations were given to Barb and Brian Harris on their 52nd anniversary.

Announcements were made concerning upcoming events and luncheons and the card nights at the Hall.

Dorothy Domm read interesting items from the seniors publication, The Voice. Cooking tips such as  adding sour cream to scrambled eggs and reheating leftover pizza in a cast iron skillet to preserve its crispy crust were shared. Questions were asked about the possibility of crying under water and the meaning of a penny for your thoughts, giving your two cents worth, and sleeping like a baby all through the night when babies awake every few hours. She asked if anyone could recall real ice boxes, light dimmers on the floors of cars, and bicycle pant clips. Jokes were shared about hunting female and male flies. A story was read about changes in life and how the image of grammas have changed from rocking chairs and knitting to shopping and going on bus trips and sitting pool side in red or yellow polka dotted bikinis.

Audrey Dickert and Florence Dickert invited Mighton to share stories of her trip. Mighton was thrilled to play a round of golf in sunlight at midnight in the land of the midnight sun. She received a certificate authenticating the time and date, June 21, 2011. By train, she marvelled at the scenery, steep slopes, scarcity of trees, sled dog training, variety of wild animals, and best tasting fish and salmon ever. By ship, she was amazed by the water, mist, rocks, and snow capped mountain peaks that led to layers of frozen ice fjords, blue coloured icebergs, and shrinking glaciers. Who knew looking at piles of Alaska offers pensive charm amid a rustic life style weathered in a rugged landscape?

Following the meeting, 25 people carpooled and headed to the restaurant formerly known as Patti’s Place in Clifford. At ‘Dine on Nine’, they enjoyed the mozzarella burger and soup special, salads, wraps, liver, and Thursday’s all you can eat fish and chips.

The Merry Makers meet the first Thursday of the month at Jamesway Manor in Clifford. Membership is only two dollars for the year. Find out about all the fun by joining them this month at noon for a pot luck lunch and guest speaker.
