Wellington County council approved some $46,000 in grants to community organizations when it met March 28.
“The county has historically provided grants to a variety of organizations,” treasurer Ken DeHart told council in a report of recipients and amounts they received. However, several councillors raised concern that community groups in their municipalities were not getting enough notice to make a grant application prior to the deadline.
Councillor Lou Maieron said he was aware of an organization in Erin that had expressed interest in applying for a grant, but missed the deadline. It was suggested county councillors take the initiative to mention potential county grants available to organizations when they meet with groups and service clubs.
In 2013 the county has budgeted $5,500 for scholarships, including $5,000 for $500 scholarships available to graduating high school students.
The grant applications come with a maximum amount available of $2,000.
Community programs receiving grants include the Fergus Pipe Band, $2,000, Sunrise Therapeutic Riding and Learning Centre, $2,000, Elora Arts Council, $2,000, and the Career Education Council, $2,000. Community events receiving grants include the Elora Centre for the Arts, $2,000, Mainstream Players, $2,000 and Canadian National Conservatory of Music, $1,000.
Organizations receiving grants include $500 for the Aberfoyle Agricultural Society, $500 for the Palmerston Agricultural Society, Wellington Soil and Crop Improvement Association, $500 and $1,500 for Wellington County 4-H Association.
