The Drayton Youth Centre will host its fifth annual hockey fundraiser tournament at the PMD Arena on Nov. 9 and 10. Twelve local teams will compete for a trophy and for bragging rights for the next year.
The youth centre will host the tournament under the direction of Rick Frey who, along with Allen Debour in previous years, has operated a hockey tournament here over the past decade. Until five years ago, the funds raised were sent to various charities including New Tribes in Durham, as well as Crane Lake Boys’ Camp located in Parry Sound.
The Drayton Youth Centre, with Frey’s assistance, was invited to keep the tournament going and as one of its own fundraisers.
The tournament will run from 6pm to 11pm on Friday and on Saturday from 7am until 10pm. The teams are all from Drayton and the surrounding area including Elmira, Elora, Waterloo, and Listowel.
Unless the tournament is expanded, there is currently no space for new teams. Anyone wishing to put a team on the waiting list should contact Calvin Martin.
Recently the youth centre has been experiencing some financial stress and this fundraiser will certainly help keep the bills paid so that the centre can continue to meet some of the needs for the youth in the community.
The centre plan to pursue corporate sponsors to help cover the costs for the arena rental and the refereeing in the tournament.
“We would be humbled and grateful if local businesses or individuals would be willing to make donations to help cover the tournament costs. The event organizers would be happy to give recognition to all who choose to contribute,” centre officials state.
Youth centre officials appreciate the support from the community and wish to continue to provide a safe and enjoyable place for local youth.
Anyone interested in volunteering one night per month, or in sponsoring the tournament or contributing in another way, is asked to contact Calvin Martin at 519-638-2323.
