The Grand River Conservation Authority (GRCA) has a full slate of events planned for October.
Oct. 14 marks the seasonal closure of GRCA parks. This is the day when GRCA parks close for the season which began May 1. Some parks will reopen for winter activities when conditions allow.
Also on Oct. 14, the GRCA is hosting a Guelph Lake Nature Centre Reunion and Open House at the Guelph Lake Nature Centre from noon to 4pm.
Connect with nature at the reunion and open house. Bring the family for an afternoon of exploring nature, playing games and learning (while having fun) about our outdoor world. Did you or your child attend GLNC on a school trip or summer camp? Outdoor games, nature activities and presentations will be held throughout the afternoon. This is a free event with activities for all ages. Registration is not required, but if you have questions please contact Logan Walsh lwalsh@grandriver.ca or 519-621-2763 x 2371. Those 16 years or younger must be accompanied by an adult.
A landowners workshop is slated for Oct. 16 at 7pm at the North Dumfries Community Complex in Ayr and again on Oct. 23 at the Wilmot Recreation Complex, Baden, starting at 7pm. The workshops are for rural landowners in Waterloo region to learn how to better manage the natural features on their property. Landowners will go through a workbook that will provide them with information. It will include information on the grants and other support available for tree planting through the Trees for the Grand Program. The workshops are free but space is limited, so please register in advance. Call 519-621-2763 ext. 2277 or send an e-mail to treesales@grandriver.ca.
The Best Dam Gala is set for Oct. 18 at the Cambridge Mill and will run from 7pm. to 9pm. Show your support for sustainable energy at the Best Dam Gala: A fundraising event to support a new hydro turbine at the Parkhill Dam in Cambridge. The gala will highlight the innovative way this turbine will supply clean, reliable energy as well as the partnership between the Ontario Stone Sand and Gravel Association and the Grand River Conservation Foundation. Please contact Sara Wilbur at swilbur@grandriver.ca or 519-621-2763 x 2272 for ticket information.
On Oct. 20, a spirit walk is being held at the Apps’ Mill Nature Centre from 7pm. to 9pm. Organizers will conjure up some friends who walk on the spiritual side and invite them to share tales of their lives. Dress warmly, bring a flashlight and hold hands. Afterwards we will remove the chill with a cup of hot chocolate. The cost is $5 for children under 18 years old and $10 for adults. Those 16 years or younger must be accompanied by an adult. This is a family event. Space is limited and pre-registration is required. Please call 519-752-0655 to register.
With Halloween only days away, the GRCA is hosting a “Hoot and Howl” on Oct. 27 at the Taquanyah Nature Centre 6:30pm to 8:30pm.
This is a great way to spend an evening with your family. After a short introductory slide show, we will be going out on a night hike to look for owls. We may even hear some coyotes. Bring your flashlight and dress warmly. After the hike, join us back at the nature centre for a cup of hot chocolate. This is a family event. Space is limited and pre-registration is required. Please call 519-752-0655 to register. The cost is $5 per person and children are free, thanks to a generous donation from the Haldimand Stewardship Council. Those 16 years or younger must be accompanied by an adult.
On Oct. 28, a Halloween Hike is being hosted at the Laurel Creek Nature Centre from 6pm. to 8pm. Take this opportunity to snuggle up with a snake, hear a cockroach hiss or make friends with a frog. After meeting some live animal friends, the group will head outside for a night hike. Then we will warm up by carving a super scary pumpkin. Phone 519-885-1368 to pre-register. The cost is $5 for children under 18 years old and $10 for adults. Those 16 years old or younger must be accompanied by an adult.
