Town to fix arena moisture problem

Council here authorized staff to proceed with work to correct a moisture problem at the arena and curling club in Harriston.

A report from facilities manager Al Carr at the Sept. 25 meeting advised council water had been noticed leaking from the ceiling in both the curling club and the arena lobby last winter.

After an inspection of the roof  revealed it to be in good condition it was determined the problem at the curling club was due to condensation.

The building has a single dehumidifier, but a humidistat for the unit is located only on the arena side, so it wasn’t responding to changes in the moisture level in the curling club.

“The roof is not the issue, but (rather) heat/air exchange and insulation. We initially thought it might be the roof which is relatively new but it turns out the roof is fine, and we need two separate controllers on the dehumidifiers, insulate and vapour barrier and repair siding under where curling club roof meets arena roof, and do some climate control work in the building,” explained CAO Bill White.

Council approved a recommendation to proceed with the work, which is expected to cost around $20,000.

The the money is to come from unspent capital funds allocated to recreation in the 2012 budget.
