Apparently size does matter – especially when it comes to wreaths.
On Sept. 4, councillor John Brennan queried if a wreath was ordered for Remembrance Day.
Brennan said he was unsure whether a direction from council was needed for that.
Clerk Kathryn Ironmonger believed one was ordered every year automatically.
Mayor Lou Maieron asked that this year, the wreath be at least the same size as the provincial and/or Canadian wreath.
He commented the MPP brings one size, the MP brings another, and town’s wreath has generally been smaller.
“It’s our town.”
This was an instance where he believed the extra money might be warranted.
“I don’t know what the difference in cost is between the big ones and the smaller ones.”
Councillor Barb Tocher noted there are typically three wreath sizes.
“I just want to make it the same size as the ones placed by the MP and MPP.” Maieron said.
“It’s our town and our war heroes.”
Tocher said Brennan’s resolution was to order the extra large wreath at $175.
Maieron suggested ordering the same size as the provincial and federal wreaths.
Staff responded that they may not know ahead of time.
Councillor Josie Wintersinger suggested staff call to find out what wreath size was being ordered by the provincial and federal politicians, and that council would be agreeable to that amount.
Maieron said “I don’t want to outshine the feds and the province. I just don’t want to see us with a little one if they are coming with the larger (wreath).”
Council agreed to have staff make a call to find out what the other levels of government were doing and to approve to purchase the extra large wreath at a cost of $175.
