Centre Wellington council supports the nomination of Raoul Robinson for two categories of the Ontario Heritage Trust Community Recognition Awards.
Chief Building Official Bob Foster spoke briefly to the matter at Centre Wellington’s committee of the whole meeting on Sept. 10.
He said Centre Wellington’s Heritage Committee recommended that Robinson be nominated under the categories of built heritage and for lifetime achievement.
Heritage Centre Wellington recommended Robinson based on his work and long-standing commitment to preservation of heritage in the former Town of Fergus and the Township of Centre Wellington.
The award for built heritage looks to leadership in the restoration and preservation of heritage structures (buildings, bridges etc.); outstanding contributions as a volunteer member of a Municipal Heritage Committee or other organizations dedicated to preserving heritage structures, etc.
The lifetime achievement award recognizes individuals who, for 25 years or more, have made exceptional contributions to build, cultural and/or natural heritage conservation.
Foster said Robinson has been involved in Fergus heritage for many years, but recently left the heritage committee because of health reasons.
Robinson served on the Fergus Local Architectural Conservation Advisory Committee for many years and continued with Heritage Centre Wellington upon amalgamation.
His accomplishments include creation of the only Heritage Conservation District (Brock Avenue, Fergus) in the township and publishing of “The Street Names of Fergus”.
Foster said Robinson was one of the prime movers in creating the first heritage district within Fergus. The nomination requires council endorsement, which is why the heritage committee made the request.
Council endorsed the nomination as recommended by Heritage Centre Wellington.
