Township donates $500 for revamped Puslinch directory

While the internet may have its hold on much of the world, print is not dead, especially when it comes to a home-town community directory.

Correspondence from Puslinch Community Directory volunteer Barbara Jefferson noted that in 2001, several companies and organizations sponsored the Puslinch Information Network publication of a directory promoting local services and businesses, along with contact information and telephone numbers for various community services.

“This publication proved most popular with local residents and encouraged them to buy local,” she said

Since then, much has changed with new families and new businesses. “Interest in publishing an updated, current version of this directory has sparked a group of volunteers to move forward with the project.”

The goal is  a new directory and website to ensure information is up-to-date. The directory would be delivered to each household in Puslinch free of charge, with extra copies available at township offices for new businesses and residents. It would also be made available at the library, farmers’ market, to real estate agents and local service clubs and churches.

Jefferson said local businesses are being encouraged to advertise, but township sponsorship will assist in offsetting printing and distribution costs.

Councillor Wayne Stokley said this would mark the third publication of the directory since 2001. He noted there is a group of about 14 people involved.

“It’s a great stimulation to buy local, because it indicates the types of businesses and groups within the community that people would like to focus on, or contact for their services.”

Stokley added the directory would have a map to show trails, the GO train, library, town offices and other points of interest.

“Right now we are going through a phase and looking at economic development. This provides a good focus.”

He said in the past, people raved about the directory and how it was used. He added the bulk of the costs would be generated through sponsorship advertisements. “They are looking at a budget of roughly $10,000 to put this together.”

Stokley added, “This is  a great opportunity to focus on Puslinch life. I think it is well worth the investment.”

Council had no issue with providing $500.

Councillor Susan Fielding said the amount is reasonable.

Councillor Jerry Schmidt noted the biggest income is through the sale of advertising.

“I support the idea. It is an excellent vehicle to promote Puslinch.”

Councillor Ken Roth echoed those thoughts.

Mayor Dennis Lever said his copy of the directory was beside his phone for years. Until he  heard about the sponsorship request, he had considered the town purchasing either a half or full page advertisement.

In the past, the township simply supported the project, but the municipal contact information was included under a variety of headings.

Council passed a motion to provide a grant of $500.
