Centre Wellington council has terminated its lease agreement with Valard Construction for property at Gregson Court in Fergus.
It is building a 500 kilovolt Bruce-to-Milton power line for Hydro One near Fergus. It rented about three acres at the north end of town from the township as housing for those working on the lines and for an office.
About 50 workers lived there.
The term of the lease was for 18 months, or until the end of October of this year, but the company no longer needs the land.
The Bruce to Milton line is the largest expansion to Ontario’s transmission system in 20 years. It will run 180 kilometres and pass through Wellington North and Erin.
Economic development manager Dave Rushton made the recommendation to end the lease because the company no longer needs it. He said in a report, “The site is already in the process of having all their temporary structures dismantled and removed. We hold a $40,000 deposit to ensure this is done to our satisfaction.”
He added the property will then be available for sale to anyone who approaches the township.
Council agreed to terminate the lease as of June 30.
