Annual tree survey continues

Summer is back, and once again, NeighbourWoods on the Grand volunteers and its summer staff will be conducting a tree inventory to help assess the state of the township’s urban trees.

Inventory teams will be working in Elora and Fergus and notifying homeowners in advance of their arrival, so they can ask questions about their trees. Watch for the yellow T-shirts to see when staff and volunteers are conducting the inventory in the neighbourhood.

Thirty-one variables about each tree are recorded – such as: height and species, as well as a number of indicators of the tree’s health, like defoliation, girdling roots, and cracks.

At the end of the summer Dr. Andy Kenney of the University of Toronto will analyze the field data and generate a detailed report to help NeighbourWoods better understand and improve the urban canopy.

To date, more than 4,500 trees have been checked in several dozen blocks in Elora and Fergus.

Details about individual trees, as well as the complete report can be found on NeighbourWoods website at www.eloraenvironmentcentre.ca.
