Fire permits proving popular in community

People in this community appear to like their back yard fires.

Centre Wellington council in committee of the whole on May 28 heard in the days leading up to the long weekend, May 16 to 25, the building department issued 36 fire permits and another 55 were issued by the Fergus Fire Department.

Fire Chief Brad Patton noted that people are starting to come to the department for permits and that eases the workload in the building department.

He said the online permit is proving to be popular. They became available from the township web site on Feb. 14 and as of March 31, there were 128 permits issued that way.

Still, he said, “We hope we can keep them available at the civic centre,” adding that due to staffing issues, he is unsure they can continue to be available at there. As of March 31, there were 537 burning permits issued between the department and the civic centre in total.

Permits are $25 and are also available from the township web site, www.centrewellington.ca.
