It’s the next step in certification.
On April 18, Puslinch deputy chief Steve Goode received recognition of achieving his next stage in the Certified municipal manager CMM II Fire Suppression Professional recognition.
Mayor Dennis Lever said it was his honour to present Goode with the recognition.
For those who did not know about the program, Lever said “it is an approach followed at the county level with the Municipal Management Institute.”
“I’m very pleased to see this is happening at the township as well.”
Lever then explained there are four levels of management. He noted that for Goode, the speciality is for fire fighting.
Lever’s background was one in which a great deal of time was spent on training “to ensure we got the most out our people, the most efficient carrying out their duties, and the most comfortable doing it.”
He added the people most comfortable doing a certain job are those trained for it.
Firefighter for a day
It looks like Mayor Lever will also be donning bunker gear at a coming fire fighting conference next month.
The event will be part of the Ontario Association of Fire Chiefs municipal politician seminar: The essentials of fire fighting and fire fighting 101.
The program offers municipal councillors the chance to understand the challenges of the fire service and its importance to local communities.
The two day session is intended to provide municipal representatives with essential information about the fire service.
Lever noted that he has signed up for the two days.
“… and I will go to experience the firefighter for a day described in the brochures as an interactive experience that I will never forget. I’m looking forward to that.”
Councillor Susan Fielding, who participated in the program in the past suggested “you’ll lose 10 pounds in a day, the equipment is very heavy.”
She described the event as “an eye-opening experience.”
“You’ll have lots of tales.”
Lever also intends to go to the show in Toronto to view the fire fighting equipment.
He noted a similar show in Kitchener only had a limited amount of equipment.
“I presume at this one, there will be all kinds of equipment.”
Fire Chief Bob Gordon said there is a lot of good information at the conference. Lever added he planned to spend both days at the event.
