Council uncertain of impact of any opposition

While council empathizes with Clarington’s request to reinstate a slots program, but was uncertain the effect any support would have.

On April 4, council reviewed a letter from Clarington outlining the benefits of the Ontario Slots at Racetracks program.

“The government has announced the cancellation of the program, jeopardizing the future of horse racing and breeding industry in Ontario at the cost of thousands of jobs and $2 billion in economic activity,” the letter stated.

Clarington requested the province not only reinstate, but also improve the program with its revenue sharing agreements.

The resolution drew little comment at council, which has already expressed its views at previous meetings.

“We’ve seen a lot of activity on that lately,” said Mayor Dennis Lever.

“I’m not sure how much impact this will have on the provincial government,” he added.
