Architectural Conservancy of Ontario holds AGM in Centre Wellington

The Architectural Conservancy of Ontario, Guelph-Wellington Branch, will hold their annual general meeting at Elora Centre for The Arts on April 18 at 7pm.

Members  from Centre Wellington, of the Guelph-Wellington branch of Architectural Conservancy of Ontario (G-W ACO), requested that a meeting be held in this community to rally heritage conservation-minded citizens at the local municipal level.

The organization is looking to involve interested local citizens as members to have the support of a representative from the Centre Wellington area on the board of directors.

The Architectural Conservancy of Ontario (ACO) was founded in 1933 by Professor Eric Arthur and citizens across Ontario. It was the first organization to press for heritage legislation and funding in Ontario.

The ACO is a registered charity, to preserve buildings and structures of architectural merit and places of beauty or interest. It has branches throughout Ontario. The current Guelph-Wellington branch of the ACO was formed in January 2006.

ACO recognizes that heritage is most at risk when the community is complacent about preservation. Our architectural heritage contributes to our sense of place and community identity. The economic value of heritage tourism, adaptive re-use, and civic pride is now being recognized.

The Guelph Wellington ACO seeks to provide a forum for discussion and advocacy on issues that are timely and relevant to Guelph and Wellington County.

There are numerous projects presently underway in the Township of Centre Wellington related to Heritage, such as: the intensification in the Heritage Overlay;  the proposed Victoria Crescent Heritage District designation; criteria development for proposed Heritage Guidelines in  areas identified under the Community Improvement Plan; unidentified cultural heritage landscapes; the preservation of traditional trailways; the revision of designation by-laws for the Brock Heritage Conservation District (Fergus); designations of houses and buildings of significant heritage value.

Interested citizens are invited to attend the meeting on April 18, held at the Elora Centre for the Arts, 75 Melville Street in Elora.
