An estimated 240 people packed Clifford’s community hall on March 1 to put forward ideas for future recreation programs in the area.
The meeting was called by council to gain input from residents about the future of recreation throughout the Town of Minto.
Mike Dunlop, clerk and former head of recreation in Hanover, was the facilitator at the meeting.
Minto Mayor George Bridge welcomed those in attendance and stipulated the purpose was not to close the town’s arena, but instead come up with ideas on recreation.
“We have money to invest in Clifford recreation we just want to make sure it’s spent in the right places.”
Council has $150,000 in reserves for Clifford recreation and is expected to top that off with another $130,000 in the coming budget.
“It’s great to see this many people out and it shows you care … It’s an opportunity to speak loud and clear to your council,” said Minto CAO Bill White.
He explained use of the arena has dropped off to about 36 hours weekly, lower than the town’s other arenas in Palmerston and Harriston.
Those attending the meeting were asked to rate the importance of all recreational facilities in a survey.
They were also asked to write down additional recreational activities that could be considered, as well as who should be responsible for providing recreational opportunities in the community and potential programs that could be provided year-round to improve participation at the Clifford arena and other recreation facilities.
A Clifford recreation ad hoc committee has been working to provide facilities and services such as a snack bar at the arena. The committee was formed several years ago after a consultant recommended closure of the local arena.
“Clifford public meetings are legendary,” said White, who was hired as CAO in mid-2011. “I’ve heard a lot of great ideas and what Clifford is all about.”
Residents Derek Grice, Jordan Boyle and Kelly Boyle welcomed the opportunity to discuss recreation in their community.
The suggestions they provided included concerts, dances, live theatre, minor hockey and adult recreational hockey, as well as public skating and shinny hockey, lacrosse, roller skating, auctions and a car show. The trio suggested hockey, ball and soccer should be run by local associations, while the town would be responsible for park activities, swimming, cultural events and concerts.
White said town staff will go through the information compiled at the meeting and forward it to the ad hoc committee for review. He said another public meeting will be held later this month or in April to discuss options. White suggested people unable to attend the meeting can forward their recreation ideas to his office or email address (bwhite@town.minto.on.ca.
“I don’t think council will proceed without hearing from you again,” he said. “What we are hoping to hear is some of the trends going on in the community, what you are looking for and what are some options for us.”
