WELLINGTON CTY. – Again this year, the county OPP ran its annual “Operation Back to School” campaign from Aug. 29 through Sept. 9.
Robb said the campaign was to raise awareness to motorists about the importance of road safety issues surrounding schools, students and buses throughout the county.
Officers were directed to target school zones and school bus routes. Their goal was to monitor traffic in their respective zones and educate drivers.
Officers spent a total of 76 hours during the campaign in their school zones. They laid a total of 39 charges for Highway Traffic Act violations, two bylaw charges and issued 28 warnings.
Charges laid included:
– a 72 hour suspension;
– speeding offences, 32;
– distracted driving, 2;
– seat belt offences, 1;
– other Highway Traffic Act offences, 14; and
– bylaw parking violations, 2.
Robb said all motorists should strictly adhere to all traffic laws within school zones. “The ultimate goal is the protection and safety of our children who attend our area schools,” he said.
