Locals who are annually left wondering what to do with extra tomatoes or cucumbers from their garden now have a regular – and useful – place to turn this summer.
Starting on July 4, the Belwood and District Lions Club is offering its first ever Garden Share Project every Monday night, benefitting the Centre Wellington Food Bank.
The club is asking local residents with a garden to either plant an extra row of vegetables or fruits, or to simply drop off any extra food they may produce this summer.
Every Monday evening from 6 to 7:30pm (until Sept. 19) the club will be accepting the extra garden items at the Belwood hall. The fruits and vegetables will then be transported directly to the food bank, so other locals can enjoy the fresh produce.
Belwood Lions spokesperson Gail McGill said the idea came from a club member who recently visited another Lions Club that operates a garden share program that has become so successful it is now handing out seeds each spring.
“We thought we’d start out small,” McGill said with a chuckle.
But the ultimate goal, she added, is to have the program grow throughout the summer and hopefully expand next year and beyond.
Anyone interested in participating in the Belwood and District Lions Garden Share Project can simply drop off their goods at the Belwood hall each week.
