The county will host a backyard compost bin and rain barrel sale on April 30, from 8am to 1pm – or while supplies last.
The event runs rain or shine. The Earth Machine backyard composters and “Systern” rain barrels will be available for sale at subsidized prices of $20 and $50 (tax included) on a first-come, first-served basis.
The sale is for Wellington County residents only. There is a limit of two compost bins per person. Payments can be made by cash or cheque.
The sale will be held in the parking lot at the following locations:
– Liquidation World, 480 Smith Street (Highway 6), Arthur;
– Grand River Raceway, 7445 County Road 21, Elora; and
– Rockmosa community centre, 74 Christie Street, Rockwood.
Backyard composters are also sold at cost year round at county waste facilities for $30 (tax included).
Backyard composting can reduce the amount of residential waste sent to landfill by up to 30%.
Compostable materials include: vegetable and fruit scraps, grains, coffee grounds and filters, tea bags, leaves, grass, yard trimmings, hair, and shredded unbleached paper.
Finished compost can be applied as a nutrient rich soil conditioner to lawns, gardens or houseplants.
