Work approved to halt erosion

It looks like work dealing with riverbank erosion near Concession 4 and County Road 109 is going ahead this summer.

The matter came up Monday night at Wellington North council as an addition to the regular council agenda.

Last year, council approved the engineering work for the project.

Manager of Public Works Gary Williamson said the 2010 budget included the engineering portion of the related project costs to deal with riverbank erosion.

“The riverbank is encroaching very close to the road allowance. Without remedial work, we’re going to lose the road,” he said.

He added the township is now at the point where it needs to deal with approvals from various agencies.

“It’s a time issue, and we won’t be able to wait until the budget is formally approved.”

Timing is important, he explained “because we only have a small window in the summer in which we can do the work in the river – obviously we have to get the approvals first before we can proceed.”

What he needed from council was authorization to have engineers complete the work for the approvals.

“The estimated cost is $215,000.”

He noted that Wellington County is also involved to a small degree because the work will have an impact on its bridge along County Road 109.

“We’re ready to proceed. We just need to do it in a timely fashion.”

Councillor Andy Lennox pointed out the time required for approvals is “fairly significant” which is why the matter was at council now rather during final budget discussions.

He said there are a number of agencies involved in the process.

Council subsequently agreed to a motion that Wellington North approve the project as part of the 2011 roads capital budget.
