The annual threshing bee held each summer by the Bellamy and Griffin families has benefitted the fire station here.
The families donate the proceeds from the day, and for the past four years they have chosen the Fergus Fire Fighters Association as the recipient. Since 2007, the familys’ donations have added up to $11,896.
With that amazing money, the Fire Fighters Association has been able to purchase and provide each firefighter with a Intrinsically-Safe LED Torch Flashlight that are essential to their job, and most recently were they were able to replace their old and worn outdoor event tent that is used for community and association events.
The Fergus Fire Fighters Association sent special thanks to the Bellamy and Griffin Families for their support over the past four years.
The event this year was held on Aug. 28 saw perfect weather for some grain harvesting from the fields at the Bellamy’s home farm near Belwood.
Ten years ago, the Bellamy and Griffin’s thought that a threshing bee would be the perfect opportunity to showcase how things use to be done on the farm – and invited owners of antique farm equipment to join them for the day to display their treasures and show their skills. They also invited the community to come and watch.
Spectators were treated to a display of threshing machines from years gone by being powered by antique tractors of all shapes, sizes, and colours were put to work getting the grain off the fields. The day ended with a traditional beef barbecue and this year that was enjoyed by almost 200 people.
