Community holds Remembrance ceremoney at renovated cenotaph

Sergeant at Arms Laurens Beukema led the colour party along the walkway of the newly renovated cenotaph in the Memorial Park here on Nov. 7 for the beginning of the Remembrance Day Service.

Legion President Ken Reuber welcomed 40 Legion members and residents to the service where wreaths were laid:

– for the Dominion of Canada,  for MP Gary Schellenberger, Larry Grummett;

– Ontario,  for MPP John Wilkinson, Comrade Judy Tuck;

– Town of Minto, deputy-mayor Judy Dirksen;

– Harriston Legion, Comrade Ken Reuber;

– Ladies AuxiLIary, Harriston Legion, Comrade Fran Rogers;-

– Clifford Firefighters, Comrade George Bridge.

Trumpeter Judy Dirksen played the Last Post as the flags were lowered to signal the two minutes of silence.

As Reveille sounded, the flags were raised and the colour party led the group to the service at the hall.

Close to 90 people sang O Canada, observed the two minute silence, and watched as Comrade George Bridge presented the laying of the wreaths. President Ken Reuber welcomed all and brought greetings from Prime Minister Stephen Harper, who noted the end of an era with the passing of the last known soldier of World War 1, who passed on this past year.

Dirksen appreciated the great turn out and was glad to see three generations of family members honouring men and women in the service. The service at the newly renovated cenotaph was a co-operative effort with the federal government and the Rotary Club, which provided the labour to create a pathway and cement pad.

Rev. Jody Rinas read scripture from Ecclesiastics and reminded all of the sacrifices and the labours of the men and women that allow all of us the freedoms and pleasant privileges enjoyed.

Everyone joined to sing O God, Our Help in Ages Past and God Save the Queen, accompanied by pianist Janet Huth. The colour party led the way for everyone to enjoy a time of fellowship, prepared by Sue Bridge.
