Officials seeking information after major fire

Police and the Fire Marshall have been called to investigate a fire at a pallet business at 5933 Third Line in former Eramosa township on Aug. 7, at approximately 11:40am.

The Centre Wellington Fire and Rescue Department arrived to find the building fully engaged. Equipment from the Fergus and Elora stations were dispatched. Tanker mutual aid was also dispatched from Guelph-Eramosa and Guelph Fire Departments.

District Chief Tom Mulvey said 30 to 35 firefighters plus tankers and pumpers from the stations were used in the seven-hour battle against the blaze.

He was unaware of the name of the owner, but heard the individual had suffered some minor burns trying to fight the fire with an extinguisher.

He estimated the damage to range from $250,000 to $300,000.

Fire crews acted quickly to contain the fire while protecting numerous other buildings and exposures.

Mulvey said the business was in a quonset hut, and it was “very close” to other buildings on the farm. Firefighters were able to save those.

Mulvey said the investigation is on-going and the cause of the fire is undetermined.

He added that the OPP and Fire Marshall have been called in to investigate, and he is unable to comment further.

He added if anyone has any information about the incident, they can contact him at 519-843-1950 extension 224 or email to tmulvey@centrewellington.ca.
