Maryhill captures OASA title in Ponsonby

Maryhill swept four games on the weekend at the Ponsonby ball diamonds to win the Ontario Amateur Softball Association’s B division junior title.

The event was not without some weather drama, with only four of the 12 games in the round robin event being played on Saturday because of the downpour that hit the area.

But tournament organizers Shirley Obergan said the weather on Sunday was terrific and the clubs managed to play the required eight games that were still left on Sunday, and they did it by the end of the  afternoon.

Maryhill beat Tavistock 7-5 in the final.

In the round robin, Maryhill beat Tavistock 6-5, took Newmarket 8-1, and defeated Freelton 11-2.

The winning club got off to a great tournament start immediately after the opening ceremonies.

They turned an impressive around-the-horn double play against Freelton to get out of trouble in the first inning, and then scored twice in the bottom half of their inning to take a lead they would never relinquish.

After that impressive start, they seemed to coast through the remaining games.

Tavistock had reached the finals with 14-8 win over Newmarket, and it beat Freelton 6-0 in the round robin, before losing to Maryhill.

Tavistock then beat Freelton 5-4 in the semi finals.

Those clubs will now return to their regular leagues, being finished with the OASA season. Maryhill plays in the Kitchener Fastball League.

Three weeks ago in Coburg, four junior teams qualified for the Ontario championships in Nova Scotia in August.

Those teams were, in order of their finish: Owen Sound, Napanee, Linwood, and Selkirk.
