Nearly 200 motorcycle riders visited the Eagle’s Landing here on July 3 to aid Cody Medieros.
Cody suffers from Sturge-Weber Syndrome, which means he has a “port wine” stain on his face that can work its way into his brain and cause seizures.
So Bill and Marion Redpath, as they have done for six years, held a Ride ’N’ Seek to help Cody, who lives in Britain, just outside of Listowel.
Marion Redpath said the bikers have ridden in previous years for children’s causes. Those kids lived in Mount Forest, Palmerston, Drayton and Arthur. She said most of the bikers come from Wellington County, but some arrived on a sunny Saturday from as far away as Niagara Falls.
The Redpaths run a motorcycle sales and service operation just north of the intersection in town, and by 10:30am, dozens of riders were registered, and looking over the clues.
A Ride ’N’ Seek event is just like it sounds. The riders are given a map and receive a test of their powers of observation. They had to answer questions such as:
– What is the population of West Grey?;
– Which Dr. kisses it and makes it better?;
– What’s at the Forest Edge?; and
– this Bad Apple has a lake named after him.
The riders needed a long time on their bikes to answer all the questions, because they travelled as far as Walter’s Falls and near Thornbury during their outing.
They then returned to Eagle’s Landing for a pork and beef roast barbecue. Many of them spent the night camping on the property, and Soggy Crackers, a band with a Palmerston and several Kitchener members, played into the night.
The riders seemed to be equally divided between men and women, and everyone seemed to be having a good time. The riders pay for the meal and there are raffles and prize draws, all of which raise money for the cause.
Creating the event was a natural for the Redpaths. They have been riding Harley Davidson Motorcycles for over 25 years, and have driven through many parts of the U.S. as well as Canada. Bill Redpath is a licenced mechanic and has been working on motorcycles for over 20 years.
