They clutched bags of bird seed and they carefully leaned through the bars to touch sheep, lammas and even a horse.
Grade 2 students from Alma, Kenilworth and Arthur were learning about agriculture first hand.
The Agricultural Awareness day was on June 18 and designed to give children first hand knowledge about how their food is produced, as well as the many aspects of agriculture.
The day included farm safety, dairy, beef, sheep and lammas, the Ontario Pork Producers, farm equipment, horses, River’s Edge Goat and a greenhouse.
The students were treated to pizza and milk at the end of their morning at the Arthur curling club.
The weather was beautiful, and Arthur Agricultural Society vice president pat Brown said, “There’s a number of farmers that would like to be here.”
Second vice-president Lisa Stroszka said it took “about a month” to arrange the day for the students.
Brown added, “Farmers were very encouraging. They recognize the need for this.”
A number of organizations sponsored the day and made it possible. And the kids seemed to love it.
