The City has awarded the Wellington Water Watchers Message in the Bottle program with the Water Conservation and Efficiency award under the category of community education.
The group was presented the award at the March 28 meeting of city council.
Guelph looks to recognize water conservation and efficiency leaders from the public, private, and education sectors through the annual awards. The community education category is awarded to a group or school that best demonstrates excellence in promoting or practicing water conservation.
“We are so excited to receive this award,” said Arlene Slocombe, executive director of Wellington Water Watchers. “ Our staff and volunteers have worked really hard to bring this program to as many children in our community as possible – fostering a new generation of water stewards!”
Laura Northey nominate Wellington Water Watchers for this award. “I am passionate about water issues and saw the great message being delivered to children through the Message in the Bottle program and wanted Wellington Water Watchers to be recognized,” she said.
The program was a joint project of the Eden Mills Millpond Conservation Association and was funded through the Ministry of the Environment Community Go Green fund. It ran April 2009 to December 2010. Through that time, the water conservation presentation was delivered to just under 45,000 individuals and more than 16,000 stainless steel refillable bottles were distributed.
