It looks like Wellington North’s recreation committee is an advocate of free enterprise when it comes to public auctions.
As a result, Wellington North Mayor Mike Broomhead is looking for another opinion from the administration committee..
Late last month, councillors considered a letter from Jason Oakes, of Country Carpet and Furniture, requesting the banning of specific types of furniture auctions.
At that time, council referred the issue to its recreation and administration committees.
However, after discussion of the matter at the recreation committee, chairman Bob Mason said the committee believes its responsibility is to raise revenue for the facilities.
As a result, Mason said, it does not support a ban. “They believe in free trade markets.”
Its motion stated “the recreation committee supports public auctions being held in our facilities as a way to generate revenue.”
Mason said it is up to council at this point.
Broomhead asked that council to hold off on a decision, since it had also asked for a response from the administration committee.
He said what came from recreation is a suggestion.
Councillor Dan Yake asked what happens if the administration committee recommendation is different.
He said if council asked for a report, council should probably wait to have both reports before making a decision.
“That’s just my opinion.”
