The tender committee for Centre Wellington council has awarded the contract to replace the rink floor and refrigeration system of ice pad A at the Fergus arena.
The winning bid was by A-Con Construction Limited, of Woodbridge. It was one of three companies that was chosen in a pre-qualifying round by the committee from ten companies interested in the work.
Treasurer Wes Snarr explained that if a contract is worth less than $1-million, the committee has the right, through council policy to award the contract.
It can also award a contract if the low bid is under the estimated cost because council has approved that expenditure.
Councillor Walt Visser noted that the low bid was $339,800 less than the original estimated cost for the work.
Snarr said the committee had companies qualify in advance because the work is “specialized” and that lets the committee determine if the company has done that kind of work previously, and also if it was done to the satisfaction of the employer.
