Resident Caitlin Hall was recognized by councillors here for her work helping others in need.
Hall spearheaded the Evening in Haiti fundraiser at Palmerston’s Norgan Theatre on Feb. 18.
Hall said Feb. 18 was also the first hockey game held during the Olympics, “so we were all a bit worried … but it was quite a successful evening.”
The event included the screening of The Road to Fondwa, a documentary about development work in Haiti.
The night featured comedy-hypnotist Robert Maxwell.
“The event was a great success with more than 120 people in attendance and raising more than $2,365. That amount did not include cash bar sales.”
The money is being donated to Lions International in Haiti, which will assist that group in the disaster relief efforts already underway.
She noted the generous donations made by local businesses.
“Because of that, we pretty well had no expenses so all the funds raised could go to Haiti. Although when I approached you in January about this fundraiser, I was acting on my own, the event turned out to be a great collaboration with the Palmerston Lions Club playing a key role in the planning and implementing.”
Hall said it has been a neat experience working with that organization.
Mayor David Anderson thanked Hall for her enthusiasm, noting her active role helping the Minto Chamber of Commerce.
“This is something else you’ve taken on under your own initiative and been very successful with,” he said.
