Council reviews proposed sale of Harriston Sr. School

It’s a discussion that happened behind closed doors, but it could well have a an impact on younger residents of the town.

On Feb. 17, Minto councillors held a closed discussion on the Upper Grand District School Board’s plan to dispose of the Harriston Sr. Public School.

The school closed last year, merging with an expanded Minto Clifford Public School, which sits on an adjacent property.

In accordance with Ontario regulations, the board proposed to sell the 6.5 acre site, which contains three ball diamonds, a playing field and a single storey school building.

The building is 22,708 square feet, including a 3,713 square foot gymnasium, and  was constructed in 1955, with additions in 1958 and 1972.

The item was from correspondence from a previous council session.

Mayor David Anderson said “we’ll be discussing this in closed session, because it is a property issue.”

He expressed doubt any decision would be reached by council that night.
