Township impressed with last years building statistics

Building activity was up significantly last year across Guelph-Eramosa Township.

Chief Building Official Michael Newark told council last week that 2009 was a much more productive year than 2008.

In fact, the number of permits issued by the township rose 22% from 259 in 2008 to  304 last year.

And the total value of construction climbed 62%, from almost $14.84-million to just under $24-million.

While the 2009 totals aren’t nearly as high as those in 2007 (388 permits and almost $42.5-million in construction), councillors seemed pleased with the increase over 2008.

“It’s amazing,” councillor Reta Moyer said of the increases last year. She was particularly happy to see the number of commercial permits issued had tripled from 2008 to 2009.

Newark explained the increase (from 4 to 12 permits) was simply the result of a few “small scale” commercial developments.
