The 138 members of the Grand Quilt Guild combine a passion for quilting and sewing with helping the local community.
Using donated fabric, members cut, piece, quilt and bind in order to give quilts to worthy community causes.
In the past 18 months, the guild has made the following quilt donation:
– 13 to the Bridges Out Of Poverty initiative;
– 30 to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Centre Wellington;
– 52 (33 adult quilts and 19 children’s quilts) to the Rural Support Program of Guelph Wellington Women in Crisis; and
– 16 to new international arrivals to the Fergus Elora area (including Fanta and Fatu, a mother and daughter, and sisters LadyDee and Annie, all from Liberia, sponsored by Under The Same Sky; a Congolese family of 10, sponsored by the VanGrootheest family; and a Syrian family in Fergus sponsored by Project Welcome).
“What a warm, comforting welcome to Canada and the area,” officials stated of the latter donations.
Meetings
The Grand Quilt Guild meets the second Wednesday evening of each month (except July and August) at 7:30pm at the Royal Canadian Legion in Fergus. Guests are welcome.
Special speakers, demonstrations, workshops, show and tell and, of course, community outreach are some of the guild’s activities.
“Canadians are giving and welcoming people and the Grand Quilt Guild likes to think that is especially true for quilters,” officials stated in a press release.
