As municipalities across Ontario are calling for a moratorium on school closures, the Upper Grand District School Board is once again looking into the viability of Kenilworth Public School.
Highlights of the UGDSB November board meeting include a notation on the status of that school. It states the board will review its motion from June 2003 regarding the enrollment at Kenilworth Public School and its viability.
A report will be ready by March. The school serves a large portion of Wellington North Township.
There was considerable concern raised in 2002-03 during Wellington North’s elementary school review, which considered closing the school.
At that time, the board stated the ideal school size is 350 students and Kenilworth’s enrollment is around 110.
When asked about the motion, board spokesperson Maggie McFadzen said staff is digging out the motion but does not yet have any plans for the report, which is scheduled for the March 8 business operations meeting.
After the Dec. 4 edition went to press, McFadzen responded further to the previous email sent to the school board office.
In that email, McFadzen wrote that the report was triggered as a result of a report on renewal work required at the school, and that funding sources may be in question.
She added that the other trigger involved a student population of 120 students for two years in a row.
