Businesses staying strong, says chamber president

“Despite a lot of the economic doom and gloom that you hear, overall, businesses in Minto are very strong and growing,” according to the president of the Minto Chamber of Commerce.

Glen Hall was at council recently to provide information on the group’s activities. He said the chamber has been a very active group this year, with a membership of about 130.

“It seems we’re adding more every week or two.

“It’s a growing group and we’re pretty active right now doing a lot of things.”

He highlighted just a few of the coming events for the fall season.

“We’ve expanded a lot more of our partnerships and are doing a lot more with the Mount Forest Chamber of Commerce as well. It helps increase the opportunities for everyone.”

There has also been more work with the Saugeen Business Development Corporation.

Events earlier this month included an HST discussion with Minister of Revenue John Wilkinson and an OPP Fraud Detection Program with Ontario Provincial Police Constable Mark Cloes.

Coming events include a Women in Business meeting on Oct. 23, the Christmas Elves Shopping Spree launch in Minto the week of Oct. 26, the business awards gala in Mount Forest on Oct. 28 and the annual Minto Chamber of Commerce Christmas social at the Harriston Legion on Dec. 7.

He said the town is heading into its fourth shopping spree. The past two years about 35 businesses participated.

He added that last summer, “We gave away almost $2,000 worth of prizes and gift certificates … as well as a stay at Meiklejohn house.”
