County council has already approved a planning exercise for its lands at Wellington Place in Aboyne, but one idea has already received some approval.
Councillor Brad Whitcombe presented recommendations from the museum and archives portion of the information, heritage and seniors committee, and liked the idea of a memorial forest somewhere on the grounds.
The minutes of that meeting stated that Museum administrator Bonnie Callen had reported a suggestion that she had received from Walter Bolger to create a memorial forest somewhere on the grounds.
That would enable loved ones to be remembered through a donation and having a tree planted.
The recommendation noted that if the idea is approved, councillors will have to be mindful that the property is also slated to have an OPP Detachment centre on the lands, as well as a new hospital.
The minutes also noted that Warden Joanne Ross-Zuj had reported on a similar program that was launched at Station Square in Elora by NeighbourWoods. The recommendation stated that county tree nursery manager Rob Johnson should be contacted and involved in the project if it proceeds. Whitcombe supported the proposal. “It sounds like a wonderful idea,” he said, adding that if it is approved, the county planning committee, which oversees the Green Legacy program, and Johnson should be involved.
