An official ceremony last weekend celebrated the replacement of six local bridges in the Guelph-Eramosa Township.
Wellington-Halton Hills MP Michael Chong, MPP Ted Arnott, Guelph MPP Liz Sandals and Guelph-Eramosa Mayor Chris White took part in the ceremony and expressed their pleasure at seeing the important Canada-Ontario Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund (COMRIF) projects reach completion.
“I’m pleased we’ve helped upgrade these six bridges, thereby increasing road safety and accessibility for local residents,” said Chong. “These projects show that the different orders of government – federal, provincial and municipal – can work together to improve the quality of life for the people of Wellington County.”
Work on the projects included increasing the overall span of each bridge, in order to accommodate two-lane structures with barrier systems, and approach guiderail protection.
A new pedestrian sidewalk on the Eden Mills bridge and improvements to a nearby intersection were also completed. “Bridges and roads connect people and communities,” said Mayor Chris White.
“These projects improve access and load capacity, so goods and services from local farms and businesses are delivered in an efficient and reliable manner.” In total, the governments of Canada and Ontario each committed about $1.22-million to enhance this local bridge infrastructure.
The township committed the balance of each project’s total eligible cost. Total COMRIF grants received by the township included:
– $152,500 under intake one for the Eden Mills bridge;
– $648,667 under intake two for the replacement of bridges 13, 20, and 22; and
– $415,000 under the third round for the replacement of bridges 10 and 11.
