The Eden Mills Writers’ Festival is hosting an afternoon of accomplished authors and music at its spring benefit.
The three guest writers this year will be Michael Ondaatje, Jane Urquhart, and Leon Rooke.
As the Writers’ Festival enters its 21st year, the Words that Sing spring benefit will bring together the original members who first came together in Rooke’s backyard in 1989 when the festival was born. Since then, over 440 authors have shared their stories, talents and literature with thousands of patrons.
The spring benefit will also showcase the musical talents of local Guelph artist, soprano Theresa Thibodeau, supported by John McClelland on the piano. The benefit runs this Sunday at 2pm at the Norfolk United Church, 75 Norfolk Street in Guelph
Tickets are $20 and $15 for students. Tickets can be purchased at The Bookshelf in Guelph or at the door.
Ondaatje is the author of five novels, numerous books of poetry, and a memoir. The English Patient won the Governor General’s award and the Booker prize and Ondaatje is a recipient of the Order of Canada.
Jane Urquhart is the author of five novels, four books of poetry, and a collection of short fiction. Her books have won the Trillium award, the Governor General’s award for fiction, and France’s Le prix du meilleur livre etranger. She is an Officer of the Order of Canada.
Rooke is the Eden Mills Festival founder. His latest work, The Last Shot, will be published by Thomas Allen later this year. He has won numerous awards including the Governor General’s award for fiction, the Canada-Australia Literary prize, the North Carolina award for literature and the Pushcart prize, among others. In 2007 he was made a Member of the Order of Canada.
