It is normally easy for a reasonably good golfer to hit the green on a par 3 hole – unless there is a big distraction that comes along.
That will be one of the features of the eighth annual Belwood Lions Club’s golf tournament at Lake Belwood on June 6.
The shot proposition becomes a whole lot more difficult when a hole in one means driving away in a $35,000 new car.
It is difficult to stop thinking about that car – and golf is a tricky proposition at best.
And the successful shooter would get to keep that car, too. It’s not just a year lease, but an outright prize courtesy of Ken Weeks Pontiac Buick Ltd.
Tournament organizer Jim Lindsay said on Friday morning that a couple of years ago, someone came within 13 inches of that coveted prize. He added that Weeks has been providing prizes for the tournament since its inception.
The tournament first began as a fundraiser that included only Lions Clubs, but it has since been opened up to up to 100 foursomes maximum and it offers a large number of prizes.
Three of them are:
– women’s longest drive, on hole 5;
– men’s longest drive, on hole 4; and
– closest to the pin, on hole 11.
Lindsay noted that the new car is not all is available for prizes. The vehicle winner will have to hole out a tee shot on hole 3. Other prizes donated by Weeks include:
– a five days and four nights golf vacation at Fairmont Resorts, at hole 6;
– a TaylorMade Burner driver and a 3- and 5- fairway woods, at holes 11 and 16, and also a cash donation; and
– TaylorMade Tour Power Burner irons at hole 13.
“It’s something that is very generous of him,” said Lindsay of all those prizes from Weeks.
Lindsay said the proceeds from the tournament will go to the Lions Club’s Dog Guide work, as well as for community betterment. He added that he is trying to arrange for a Dog Guide to be present at this year’s event.
For Lions Club members only, there is a prize of a bus trip to the casino at Orillia, which has been given each year.
Lindsay said the tournament began as an event only for Lions Clubs, but has now expanded.
It begins June 6 with a shotgun start at 10am. At noon, participants are fed hamburgers, and at the end of the day there is a steak dinner, and ever entrant will receive a prize.
The cost is $85 per person and that includes 18 holes of golf and a power cart.
The deadline to enter is May 15.
