From 10am to 2pm on Aug. 15, Trafalgar Road here will be bustling with activity as Spirit of the Hills 2009, a Family Fun Day, takes place.
Sponsored by the Hillsburgh Lions Club and the Let’s Get Hillsburgh Growing committee, the event offers something for everyone.
Classic cars will line part of Trafalgar Road. Vote for a favourite vehicle.
Farther down the street, kids can dig for dinosaurs, play mini golf, enjoy the bouncy castle, or shoot hoops. Once again, the local firemen will show the kids the workings of a fire truck. All day, children will be entertained by Rory Gaudon, a storyteller and balloon artist, as he wanders the street.
Local businesses will display merchandise and services. Kugo Tattoos, a favourite with the young people, is returning as well as Ruth Robinson, with her candies, Joan Brown with her Tupperware and Dot Woods with her specialty teas. Several local artists and craftsmen will be displaying their handicrafts too.
Does nine holes of golf for appeal? This is one of many items people can bid on at the silent auction.
The Hillsburgh Lions Club volunteers will be barbecuing lunch in the Hillsburgh Historical Parkette. On the stage there at 10:30am, Erin’s newly formed senior’s group, the Young at Heart Choir, will perform. At noon, visitors there can sway and tap in time to the rhythms of the Credit Valley African Drummers.
On the library’s front lawn, Wellington County’s Green Legacy staff will explain the County’s tree planting program. Credit Valley Conservation will have a display, and Pat Kelly, from the Izaak Watson Flyfishing Club, will show interested anglers how to tie a fly. Award winning face painter, Tania Crook, will be painting designs again this year and at 11am, Dr. Savannah Files will share her knowledge of heroic tales and ancient myths under the tent on the library’s lawn.
For those interested in local history, walking tours of the main street of Hillsburgh will be led by long-time resident Ivan Gray. Visit to the Hillsburgh branch library to investigate the maps and photos of the Hillsburgh Past and Present display.
Then try to identify any of the local people in the film Stars of the Town – Hillsburgh edition. The black and white film, made by the late Reverend Roy Massecar between 1947 and 1949, shows Hillsburgh residents going about their daily activities at work, at school, and at play.
Downtown businesses will be open, accessible, and joining in the festivities.
If it rains, the event will move into the community centre.
