The issue of the impact of the impending HST came up once again at Minto.
Mayor David Anderson had asked the item to be brought forward from a previous meeting.
Anderson referred to the correspondence from Innisfil speaking to the Harmonized Sales Tax and how it will affect electricity rates starting July 1, 2010.
“I faxed a copy of that down to our MPP John Wilkinson, who has sent it on.”
Anderson said a lot of the concerns were directed to the Minister of Infrastructure.
He added that Wilkinson is hoping to get information back to the town before the Aug. 12 meeting.
“I wanted to make sure we had all the information before we endorse this or not.”
Innisfil believes the overall impact of the HST will have the net effect of increasing rates by 8% across the province.
However, consumers are still paying off Ontario Hydro’s stranded debtload, and will likely continue to do so for several more years.
As a result, Innisfil wants the province to exempt electricity sales from the HST until that debtload is paid off.
