Ever wonder how hard it is to make ice cream? Ever tasted cheese made from sheep’s milk? Ever wonder how pigs become cement and lipstick? Ever wonder how many kinds of potatoes there are? These and many other questions will be answered at the Wellington County Museum and Archives during our “Take a Break with Us” March Break programme.
Building on our culinary theme this year, we will explore the importance of five different foods – common to the early settlers of Wellington County as well as residents of the county today! Each afternoon from 1 – 4 pm, offers a different theme and each afternoon will include hands-on activities, crafts, special guests and highlights from our collection.
Monday we celebrate cows with the County Dairy Educator, June Switzer as she helps visitors make butter and ice cream as well as explain what cows eat. In addition to tasting scones and home made butter we will also be making candles the old-fashioned way!
Tuesday the focus is in the potato! Join us for a crazy afternoon of food, fun and games!
Wednesday is “Everything but the Squeal” day as we explore all that the humble pig has to offer with the Pork Producers of Ontario educator, Deb Campbell. Thursday it is all about sheep from fleece to fiber and milk to cheese – the chance to taste and touch all that sheep have to offer. Joining us will be Nicole Bzikot, cheese specialist with Best Baa Dairy and the Ewenity Dairy Co-operative.
We finish off the week with an ode to spring. Come and meet our museum gardener, Liane Howell and learn how to care for fruit trees, play some games, taste some fruity treats, and prepare for Easter with some spring time crafts!
Several new exhibits are open to the public this week, including our new 1920’s farm kitchen as well as the “Quilt Treasures from the Collection” display in the Exhibit Hall.
Regular Admission rates apply and children must be accompanied by an adult at all times. Events are ongoing from 1 – 4 pm each afternoon and members are welcome to attend, free of charge!
