Memorial cairn approved by Minto

Councillors here have officially given their seal of approval for Royal Canadian Legion Branch 296 – Harriston, to build a memorial cairn next to the Harriston cenotaph.

That will allow the group to build a cairn with a plaque similar to the one already on the site, and which would list the local veterans who have passed away.

The matter came up as a result of a presentation made to council at its previous session.

The only clarification from the original motion was from deputy-mayor Judy Dirksen.

She noted the original motion stated the cairn would have a plaque to list prominent veterans who have passed away.

“How prominent do you have to be, to be on that list?” she asked. “… and if you’re not prominent, do you still get on the list?”

“You do like to play with the English language,” offered Mayor David Anderson.

She responded, “It just concerns me, because they are all important,” Dirksen said.

Councillor Wayne Martin believes the intent is the cairn is for the members of the Harriston Legion – all the members.

Councillor Tammy Reiner said her interpretation is they are all prominent.

The motion was revised to state that the cairn would include a list of veterans who had passed away.
